Any Serious Scholar who wishes to know the tradition is by that very fact forced to look at the tradition. It simply is not possible nor reasonable to expect that a scientific knowledge of the tradition would be obtained by paying attention to only scholars of the last 50 or so years. Even a serious study of those scholars will reveal that there is one name that will keep surfacing, not in the main body of texts or rarely so, but in the many footnotes those texts often have. For instance, if one were to read Congar’s works on tradition, a name will keep coming up in the footnotes and that name is Franzelin. The reason for this is because Franzelin’s work, here translated into English for the first time, became the standard by which any scholarly discussion was to be had. While many works of the saints dealt with tradition and are key to understanding the tradition, such as St. Vincent of Lerin and St. Robert Bellarmine, their works were more ordered toward addressing questions of their day and laying out the principles to answer those questions. None of the saints of the past wrote a systematic treatise on tradition which penetrated all aspects of the Church’s tradition in depth in the manner that Franzelin did. Even the enemies of tradition and even those who held contrary positions to Franzelin’s De Divina Traditione had to acknowledge that his work set the standard for the discussion. Much like the Sentences of Peter Lombard which set the various topics that any true scholar of theology would address in a comprehensive treatment of theology, so Franzelin became the standard by which the theology of tradition would be adequately treated.
